Explore what makes Argosy of Fables a standout for vintage children's book collectors, with practical decision rules for buying old rare books.
Quick Answer
Argosy of Fables is a worthy centerpiece for collectors of vintage children's books, especially if you value early 20th-century illustrated editions. This guide gives you concrete rules for deciding whether it fits your old rare books collection.
Why Argosy of Fables Stands Out
Argosy of Fables, edited by Frederic Taber Cooper and illustrated by Paul Bransom, offers a broad selection of fable literature from many ages and lands. For collectors, its appeal lies in the combination of a comprehensive anthology and the visual charm of 24 full-color plates.
The book's blue cloth binding with yellow and orange stamping is typical of its era, adding to its vintage appeal. If you collect illustrated children's classics, this edition provides both literary and artistic value.
Condition and Rarity: What to Look For
When considering old rare books, condition drives value. A bright, clean copy with only slight rubbing is desirable. Check the spine, hinges, and plates for damage, as these are common issues in vintage editions.
Rarity is not just about age; it's about how many copies survive in good shape. Argosy of Fables from around 1921 may not be extremely scarce, but well-preserved copies with intact color plates are less common.
Decision Rules for Buying Old Rare Books
- Check the plates: Verify that all 24 color plates are present and free of foxing or tears. Missing plates drastically reduce value. Count the plates before purchase.
- Inspect the binding: Look for a tight binding with no loose pages. Slight rubbing on the cloth is acceptable, but major wear or spine damage is a red flag.
- Compare prices: If the price is significantly lower than comparable copies, question why. Verify condition and completeness before committing. Use catalog prices as a baseline.
Featured Edition
- Argosy of Fables: This edition features 24 full-color plates by Paul Bransom and includes black-and-white pictorial endpapers. The color plates are a major draw for collectors, so ensure they are all present and in good condition when evaluating a copy.
