During the pilot year of a Los Angeles school system integration program, Armstrong and Charlie learn to cope with everything from first crushes and playground politics to the loss of loved ones and racial prejudice in the 1970s.

Charlie isn’t looking forward to sixth grade. If he starts sixth grade, chances are he’ll finish it, and he’ll be older than his older brother ever was. Armstrong isn’t looking forward to sixth grade either. He’ll have to wake up at five thirty to ride a bus to an all-white school in the Hollywood Hills. When they are assigned seats next to each other, what starts as a rivalry becomes a close friendship.
Set in Los Angeles in the 1970s, Armstrong and Charlie is the hilarious, heartwarming tale of two boys from opposite worlds. Different, yet the same.

I bought this for my classroom and the two separate storylines weave together so well, my fifth graders actually argued over who got to read it next. The way it handles playground politics and the friendship growing between them feels real without being preachy, and the pages held up after a full mo

Edward ★★★★★

The integration program setting feels authentic, and the way the two boys' alternating chapters slowly weave together kept me turning pages past midnight. The handling of playground politics and first crushes is spot-on for fifth grade.

Samuel Q. ★★★★★

The story hits on real middle school issues like crushes and loss, but it handles them with such honesty that I stayed up way past midnight to finish it. The way it captures the pilot year of the integration program feels incredibly genuine, not preachy at all.
